This form enables you to import data into Symphony from Excel. Here you tell Symphony which file to import and how the data is laid out. When processing the data, Symphony creates the Respondents, Codes, Tags, and Demographics as needed.

Symphony handles two general layouts of data.

1. One row per comment -- in this case, each row contains the complete data for the Comment, and "stands alone" from the other rows. Respondent data (name, title, etc.) is repeated for each row, and there are as many rows of data for each Respondent as there are Comments. If the data is pre-coded, the columns for the codes must reside on the same row as the comment. This format is typical of database extracts.

2. One row per Respondent -- in this case, each row contains the complete data provided by a single Respondent. Each row may contain any number of comments. If the data is pre-coded (for example, by the item question text on a survey or by question group) the code cell must reside in the same column as the comment, and the same code is applied to all comments in that row. This format is typical of online surveys.

SpreadSheet
This dropdown list contains the names of all the spreadsheets included in the Data File workbook. By default, data is imported from the first spreadsheet. To import from a different spreadsheet, choose it from this dropdown list. Whenever you switch spreadsheets, a sample of data is loaded in the Source File Preview Pane.

Duplicate Action
This specifies which action to take when a duplicate comment is encountered.

A comment is considered a duplicate when one already exists for the same Respondent, with the exact same text, and coded to the same code.

Your choices are as follows:

-
Accept all -- Symphony will automatically import duplicate Comments
-
Ignore all -- Symphony will not import duplicate Comments
-
Ask me -- When a duplicate is encountered, Symphony will display the Comment and related information and will let you choose whether or not to import it. At the same time, Symphony will give you the option to switch your preference to Accept all or Ignore all, so you are not prompted anymore.
