Code Form

Code Form

This form is used for creating new codes and editing existing codes.

1 . Code Text AreaCode Text Area

This area contains the text of the code.

2 . Content Tree (Codes Only)Content Tree (Codes Only)

Displays the project's coding structure in a Content Tree. Clicking a Code in the Content Tree changes the parent of the Code being added or edited to the newly-selected code.

3 . Has Valence?Has Valence?

Valence is a term used to describe whether the comments assigned to the code are relevant and meaningful to the project. By default, all Codes have valence, meaning it is assumed that the comments are relevant. Removing the checkmark indicates that the Code is not relevant. This provides a handy means for ignoring irrelevant content during analyses and when producing reports, in that all non-valence content will be automatically excluded if the filter is set to include only data with valence.

4 . RatingRating

The Code Rating property has been deprecated in favor of the more flexible Tag Value, and is included for backward compatibility only. For new projects, please use Content Tags for quantitative analysis. If you have older projects, that use the Code Rating, please make the necessary changes prior to upgrading beyond Symphony version 2.0.

5 . OK MoreOK More

Clicking this button saves the edits to the current code and readies the Code Form for creating another code. When adding a new code, this button is the default, meaning pressing the Enter button is the equivalent of clicking this button. This is most useful when you know you are going to be creating more than one Code at a time.

6 . OKOK

This button saves the edits to the current code and closes the Code Form. When editing an existing code, this button is the default, meaning pressing the Enter key is the equivalent of clicking this button.

7 . CancelCancel

This button closes the Code Form without saving edits to the current code. If you were in the process of creating a new code, the new code is not created.

8 . Code TypeCode Type

This dropdown lets you specify the primary way in which the code will be used.

  • Theme -- if Theme is specified, the code will be part of the thematic coding of the project.

  • Question -- this Question is specified, the code can still be used for thematic coding, but it will be included as a question when you generate an Interview Guide. If this code is a sub-code, the higher level codes that create the path to the code will also be included in the Interview Guide, regardless of whether they are specified as Theme or Question.
